The word "Information Society" usually reminds us things like internet and e-business. However, even in the information society manufacturing (production) does never disappear and remains to be the most important industry. Japanese industry has been facing very tough situation through the global competition against other countries, particularly, China or other Asian countries. It is the only way for them to survive this competition by making technological innovations and reducing costs while keeping the world-best quality. And information technology has been extensively utilized there to achieve these goals.

President Yamada at Incs corp. describes this by the word "Computerized Industry" and says "it is the time of the second IR (industrial revolution)." While in the first IR in 18th, the productivity was revolutionally increased by the power of steam, in the second IR by the power of IT.

In our laboratory, we are conducting research into "Digital Engineering Systems" to support those information systems for industry, such as CAD and CAM. In particular, we are studying basic theories and algorithms for geometric modeling and product modeling in order to implement innovative design/engineering processes.
